The Audi A5 will get an all-new, 2.0-litre turbocharged engine as a more fuel-efficient alternative to the 3.0-litre V6.

The 208bhp TFSI unit in the Audi A5 is based on the company's 1.8-litre engine, but has new ‘valve lift’ technology that aids economy and performance.

The new sliding cam units enable the ECU to use a higher cam profile under heavy acceleration, or a more fuel-efficient, lower cam profile when the engine is under lower loads.

As a result, the 2.0-litre engine has a massive 258lb ft of torque from 1500rpm – more than the 3.2-litre V6. The company claims the Audi A5 2.0 TFSI can reach 60mph in 6.9sec (0.7sec slower than the 3.2 V6), and produces just 154g/km of CO2 (42.8mpg).

Prices for the Audi A5 2.0 TFSi start at £28,760 for the front-wheel drive model, and £30,285 for the Quattro all-wheel drive.

First deliveries are expected in August.
