Nissan confirms new model for Sunderland

03 June 2008

Nissan has confirmed that it will produce a new model at its Sunderland plant. Production of the Nissan Micra city car will be moved from the UK plant to India to make room for the new model.

The Japanese firm announced that it will invest millions of pounds in the new project, which has also been given government backing of £6.2 million.

Business secretary John Hutton said: “Nissan’s investment is great news for Sunderland, for jobs in the area and for regional economy. It shows Britain is a competitive place for the automotive industry to invest and do business.”

Nissan currently employs around 12,000 people in Europe, and the new project is likely to increase that by 800 jobs.
