Driving skills will be taught in schools under new government proposals unveiled today. The foundation course in safe road use is part of a larger proposed reform of the way people learn to drive that the government hopes will cut the accident rate and road deaths of newly qualified drivers.
The course will be piloted in Scotland later this year, and will be open to students aged between 14 and 16 who will gain a certificate in safe road use. It will cover the Highway Code, journey planning, tiredness, peer pressure and social attitudes to driving.
If it is successful, it will be rolled out across the UK. The driving test and the way driving skills are taught is also set to change. The government wants to introduce a syllabus for driver training and give driving instructors a star rating.
The theory test will be changed to test an understanding of safe driving, while the practical test will allow learner drivers to find their own route, as well as requiring them to explain their actions in specific situations.
The consultation will run until 8 September, but any recommendations are unlikely to be implemented until next year.
