Cadillac’s new CTS saloon doesn’t go on sale in the UK until the summer, but our spies have already spotted the coupe and now the estate version testing in America.

This CTS wagon will be a direct rival for the BMW 5-series and Mercedes E-class estates; it is expected to make its debut at next year’s Detroit motor show.

The CTS range is the latest attempt to enhance Cadillac’s status in Europe and make the brand a serious premium player there. So an M5 Touring-rivalling super-estate, wearing the CTS-V badge, seems a distinct possibility.

It’s been confirmed that the standard saloon will have a CTS-V derivative, powered by GM’s 6.2-litre V8 and offering 542bhp at the rear wheels.

GM vice-president Bob Lutz has acknowledged the demand for “limited-edition, high-performance” models in Europe, and Cadillac will recognise the image-boosting potential of a fast wagon, particularly in the UK and Germany.

You’ll notice from our interior shots of the CTS estate that the sloping boot and small rear windows have been designed to maintain a sleek profile, rather than maximising space and practicality.
