New York throws out C-charge
08 April 2008
Lawmakers in New York have thrown out the mayor’s plans for inner-city congestion charging before the proposals had even reached their first voting stage.
City mayor Michael Bloomberg devised the road tolling legislation, but a spokesman for the state’s Democratic Assembly confirmed “There was no support… to bring the bill to the floor.”
The money raised by the potential 7am-7pm road charge would help to improve public transport, according to Mayor Bloomberg.
But there were serious concerns about traffic jams that could be caused outside the Manhattan area, along with cynicism over the spending of revenue from the system.
