Mitsubishi is fitting the same twin-clutch Sport Shift Transmission (SST) found in the Mitsubishi Evo X, to its Outlander SUV.

The Outlander is the first SUV to be fitted with the automated manual SST, which delivers a slick, seamless transition between gear changes.

The structure of the SST is a lot simpler than the average automatic transmission because it employs clutches rather than a torque converter to transmit the engine’s power, thus reducing overall fuel consumption.

Hydraulic controls select two gears simultaneously by putting the odd (first, third and fifth) and even (second, fourth and sixth) gears on separate inputs shafts with each connected to its own clutch.

When first gear is engaged by one of the wet multi-plate clutches then second is already pre-selected. When the driver selects second, via the paddle shifters on the steering wheel, the second multi-plate clutch engages and delivers a smooth and uninterrupted supply of power.

The UK spec Outlander will come with dual mode (Normal and Sport) and Hill Start Assist functions. Mitsubishi has yet to confirm a launch date or price, but keep checking Autocar.co.uk for further developments.
