The Toyota Urban Cruiser is one of the first of an expected flood of what are known in the industry as ‘B-Class SUVs’.

Based on a Yaris platform, the five-door Urban Cruiser does what it says on the tailgate, being ‘a fun to drive’ low-impact SUV, aimed at city and urban driving.

Despite being just 4m long, Toyota is promising space for five and ‘generous luggage space’. When it goes on sale in the UK ‘in the first half of next year’ all versions are expected to come in below the 140-g/km benchmark. There will also be a choice of front- and four-wheel drive.

Toyota sources say that the Urban Cruiser is a return to the inspiration of the original, early 1990s, three-door RAV4, which started the trend for compact urban-centric SUVs. A similar version of this car is already sold in the US under Toyota’s popular Scion ‘youth’ brand.
