Mini has launched a new 208bhp model as the flagship for its high-performance John Cooper Works sub-brand. The new car, which will also be available as a Clubman, has a heavily reworked version of the 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine from the Cooper S that can take it from 0 to 62mph in 6.5sec and on to a top speed of 148mph.
The Mini JCW also has numerous chassis modifications. It is fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels that weigh less than 10kg each, and rides 10mm lower, with stiffer spring rates and dampers. It goes on sale in August priced at around £20,500 (£21,700 for the Clubman) and has a CO2 figure of 165g/km.
Dr Andreas Schueers, who managed the redesign of the engine, explained: “The engine has undergone extensive development, with long durability runs. We weren’t simply concerned about getting more power from the old unit, but also providing plenty of low-down torque, to maintain the driveability of the car around town.” Peak torque of 192lb ft is available between 1850 and 5700rpm.
This John Cooper Works model also features an extra Dynamic Stability Control mode, in keeping with its sporty image. An Electronic Differential Lock Control, activated by pressing the traction control button for 10 seconds, mimics the effect of a limited slip diff, applying braking to a spinning wheel when cornering under heavy throttle, but does not reduce the engine power.
