Volkswagen is replacing its 1.6-litre FSI engine across the Golf, Jetta, Eos and Passat ranges with a new 1.4-litre TSI engine.
The new unit promises more power and torque and lower fuel consumption and emissions.
The new TSI engine is based on the existing supercharged and turbocharged 1.4 TSI ‘Twincharger’, but unlike that engine it has only a turbocharger. Confusingly, though, it has the same name, so you’ll only be able to tell the difference between TSIs by their power outputs (and how they drive, too).
Whereas the Twincharger comes in either 168bhp or 138bhp forms, the new turbo-only TSI produces 120bhp, 7bhp more than the 1.6 FSI.
More impressive, however, is the increase in torque. This rises from 114lb ft at 4000rpm in the 1.6 to 155lb ft from 1500 to 3500rpm in the 1.4.
Fuel economy rises from 42.2mpg to 44.8mpg, and emissions drop from 161g/km to 149g/km with the standard six-speed manual, while they’re a mere 139g/km of you go for the optional £1300 seven-speed DSG system, available in 2008.
The new TSI costs an extra £150 on Golfs, Jettas and the Eos, and £175 on the Passat.
