The Japanese motor show at Tokyo always promises to be exciting. It's packed with weird and wonderful creations designed to appeal to the home market, but which won’t ever make it beyond the doors of the Makuhari Messe in Chiba City, Tokyo.

This year, as ever, there are plenty of those, but even more besides. We’ve got the new Nissan GT-R, all 473bhp of it, the BMW 1-series concept tii and the Mitsubishi Evo X to name but three.

And if you think that sounds a bit too extreme, there are dozens of clean, green machines too, from the Toyota 1/X, which hints at the next Prius, to the Honda CR-Z, a compact hybrid sportster, to the all-electric Subaru G4e.

Come back throughout the day for live updates from the Tokyo show floor, and later this afternoon to read Steve Cropley's Tokyo show report, and to watch Richard Bremner's Tokyo show video.
