BMW has won its hearing at Witney Magistrates’ Court, giving it the go-ahead to develop its site over the course of an existing right of way.

Walkers’ rights group the Ramblers’ Association had mounted a challenge to the closure of the footpath and bridleway, which followed the route of a Roman road.

But today (15 October) the court ruled that the bridleway and footpath can be closed.

BMW will build a new route, to the west of the existing route, as originally planned. The Ramblers’ Association had objected that the new route, close to Oxford’s busy ring road “endangers the health, safety and wellbeing of pedestrians.”

BMW has said that it will start work on the new path within the next 16 weeks, and that the project will take six months to finish. In the meantime, the existing path will continue to be used.
