BMW is in court today (15 October) in Oxfordshire, where it is battling the Ramblers’ Association over plans to build over a 2000-year-old footpath and bridleway.
The footpath - an ancient right of way that was once a Roman road - stands in the way of a planned extension to the Mini factory. It is used by around 400 people a day – many of whom are believed to be workers at the Mini factory.
BMW says it will reroute the path, but this new route would follow Oxford’s congested ring road for more than a mile.
The Ramblers’ Association isn’t happy with this plan, and says that the proposed new path “endangers the health, safety and wellbeing of pedestrians”.
“BMW’s plans will deny hundreds of people per day a safe and quiet means of accessing work and the countryside beyond, endangering their health and safety as they are forced to trek along a busy B road,” said Adrian Morris from the Ramblers’ Association.
A decision on the path is expected today at Witney Magistrates’ Court.
