Citroen has released a diesel-powered version of its sporting baby hatchback, the C2 VTS.
Fitted with a 110bhp, 1.6-litre HDi engine, the latest addition to the C2 range boasts 80 percent more torque than its petrol equivalent with 192lb ft on offer, and 64mpg economy on a combined cycle.
The best is yet to come, as only 119g/km of C02 are emitted, giving the C2 HDi VTS free entry into London as of next year and band B for tax. That equates only £35 for 12 months road tax.
Buy within the next month and you benefit from an introductory price of £10,995, which gets you the C2 HDi VTS on the road with air-conditioning, 16" alloys, ESP and sports seats.
Buy after the introductory offers run out and you'll pay closer to then £13,400 list price; £1000 more than the 125bhp petrol VTS.
Of course, the sportiest C2 is a favourite with young and performance-hungry drivers, so the insurance group being rated at 6E - two bands lower than the petrol-powered VTS - should be good incentive. And you still get to 60mph in 9.4 seconds plus a top speed of 120mph.
The success of the diesel VTS with this particular group of buyers may depend on whether filling up at the black pump does terminal damage the owner's image, but either way we have no doubt that the most recent C2 will be popular.
And with all that extra torque on offer, we’re even more certain that the C2 HDi VTS will soon be behind a cloud of tyre-smoke in the unlit corner of a supermarket car park near you.
