This teaser shot is the first official image of the forthcoming new Subaru Impreza WRX STi. Although Subaru hasn't released any more information to accompany the picture, the few facts we know are whetting our appetites.

Subaru brought a WRC rally concept version of the Impreza to the Frankfurt motor show this month, and it gives the best clues to the shape of the new STi, which will this time be a much more extreme-looking machine than its WRX counterpart.

Just like the WRC concept, the road-going STi will have massively blistered wheelarches. Our source at Subaru has said that they're "practically big enough to rest a coffee cup on," which certainly makes a nice addition to the old STi's picnic-table rear spoiler.

The new STi is likely to produce around 300bhp from its 2.5-litre turbocharged flat four engine, which is a development of the old car's unit. It will use a six-speed manual gearbox, though Subaru is also developing a dual-clutch gearbox that could be used.

The STi will be officially unveiled at the Tokyo motor show in October, before going on sale in the UK in 2008. It's likely to cost around £30,000.
