From Richard Bremner in Frankfurt
Citroen underplayed the eco achievements of its C-Cactus last week, releasing the wrong figures for its weight and fuel consumption. Instead of a somewhat portly 1306kg it actually weighs 1180kg, and returns almost 100mpg rather than 78mpg.
It features many clever eco-technologies, one of them being the repeated us of components to do different jobs. So the upper half of the dash and lower half of the tailgate are the same, while the front and rear bumpers are identical too.
Not that this is a new idea – the 1976 Pininfarina Peugette concept used the same bodywork sections for front and rear. In the Citroen´s case, this approach, and the elimination of a traditional dashboard, has halved the interior components to 200.
