Anyone taking their Driving Theory Test on 3 September or later will face a tougher task than the usual. That’s because, as part of an attempt to drive up driving standards on UK roads, the Government’s Driving Standards Agency is increasing the number of questions the test contains, as well as the number you need to get right to pass.
At the moment both car and motorcycle theory tests contain 35 multiple choice questions, 30 of which candidates have to ace if they’re to be allowed to progress to the practical test. Next month, would be drivers will have to get 43 out of 50 right, in an extended time of 57 minutes, to be allowed to go forward.
Whether or not that makes the test difficult enough, when it contains questions like “why is passing a lorry more risky than passing a car,” and “you are planning a long journey; do you need to plan rest stops,” remains a debatable point. However, if it makes one UK driver better qualified behind the wheel, it's a step in the right direction in Autocar's book.
