Ever wondered how close some of the quickest tuned cars on the road would come to a genuine dyed-in-the-wool supercar in an all-out test of acceleration? Well, wonder no longer; Fighting Torque 2007, an event organised by the car nuts over on Pistonheads.com and run at the weekend, has provided the answer.

Wattisham Airfield near Ipswich was the venue for last weekend’s event, and it attracted no fewer than 92 runners, who brought cars as diverse as an Ultima GTR and a Hyundai Coupe. All of them came to do several benchmark timed three-quarter-mile sprints, and to see how their cars stacked up against the best the rest could offer. As it turned out, the best was something very special indeed.

Winner of the event, and owner of the quickest car of the day was Adrian Winch, whose 580bhp Noble M400, which runs a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 overhauled by Roush, completed the three-quarters of a mile in just 23.49 seconds, at a terminal speed of 173.2mph.

Our own Chris Harris was also there to fly the flag for Autocar, and brought along Lamborghini’s stunning LP640 Roadster. However, not even the 631bhp Lambo could dethrone Winch’s awesome sub-1000kg Noble; Harris's best time was 24.03sec; good enough for fourth place only.
