You’d think Sports Utility Vehicles were solely responsible for bringing about the end of all things, judging by the animosity they inspire from many environmentalists. They’re not, of course; you know that, as do we. However, this one’s clean enough to make your average Prius driver concerned about his carbon footprint; it’s the zero-emissions Ford Edge HySeries, and we’ve got in on video.

The HySeries Edge represents the very latest in zero-emissions thinking. It’s actually both a fuel cell vehicle and a plug-in hybrid; its batteries give it a 25-mile range on from-the-mains electrical power only, and when that runs out, a fuel cell stack kicks in, providing a further 200 mile range on the 4.5kg of compressed hydrogen gas stored onboard at a pressure of 350-bar. It’s no milk float in the performance stakes, either; this zero-emissions SUV does 85mph.

Autocar’s senior contributing editor Richard Bremner went for a drive in Ford’s latest hydrogen-powered offering earlier this week, and you can watch his video by clicking here.

“One of the really attractive things about this car is that, charged from the mains at home, it costs the equivalent of only 12p-a-litre to run,” says Bremner; “that’s a hell of a lot less than the £1-a-litre we’re paying today, and it could be in showrooms by 2015.”
