First look at new Mazda 6

07 August 2007

This is the first and only official picture to be released by Mazda of the all-new 6 saloon.

Released after Autocar.co.uk published exclusive spy pictures of the new mid-sized family car, the image confirms that Mazda is focusing even more on style with the current Mazda 6’s replacement.

The new car gets a clamshell bonnet and cycle-wing style front wheel arches very much like those of the RX-8 sports car, as well as attractive diamond-shaped headlights and a prominent, bold-looking front air dam. Many in the Autocar office noticed more than a passing resemblance between it and the current Mercedes CL, a comparison that we're sure Mazda won't be too unhappy about.

“The new Mazda 6 takes a step forward in terms of quality, and offers better safety and environmental credentials, “ said its maker, but its trump card will be Mazda’s trademark ‘zoom-zoom’ driving dynamics.

Based on the same platform as Ford’s new Mondeo, the new 6 will be longer and wider than the current one, but a sloping roofline will give it a much more athletic profile than the Ford.

Engines are likely to include Mazda’s 1.8-, 2.0- and 2.3-litre petrols at launch, and the current 119bhp and 141bhp 2.0-litre diesels.

Ford-PSA’s 2.2-litre diesel will come later, in twin-turbocharged form, developing 173bhp and 273lb ft of torque, as will Mazda’s 256bhp petrol turbo, all-wheel drive, MPS version.
