Nissan's all new X-Trail off-roader will go on sale on the 1st September in the UK, and will be priced from £18,795. That looks like a £2k price hike at first, until you realise that Nissan has discontinued the former, front-wheel drive only 2.0-litre petrol X-Trail.

The new entry-level model, called the Trek, gets lockable all-wheel drive, as well as Bluetooth phone integration, 16in alloy wheels, climate control, and a CD player. The range-topping X-Trail 2.0-litre 175 dCi Aventura goes for £26,270. The only other trim level available is 'Sport', which starts at £20,695 with a 2.5-litre petrol engine.

Three new engines have been introduced to the X-Trail for its arrival this summer. The first is a freshly developed, all-alloy 2.0-litre petrol unit. Available only in the base Trek model and mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, this engine produces 139bhp, whilst still returning 32.5mpg. No mean feat in a car weighing 1563kg.

Likely to be the most popular choice, the 2.0-litre diesel engine is available in two tunes – 148 bhp and 171 bhp. Taken straight out of the recently released Qashqai, the lower powered engine will be fitted to all three trim levels whilst the more powerful unit will be missing from the base 'Trek' trim level.

The 2.5-litre petrol engine is the only engine to come from the outgoing X-Trail model and is only fitted to Sport and Aventura models.

Sport trim looks the best value, coming in at £21,495 for the 148bhp dCi model, and including 6 CD changer, panoramic sunroof, privacy glass, cruise control and automatic headlights and wipers on top of the Trek's specification.

Aventura adds heated leather seats, electric folding mirrors and chrome door handles, but costs £2000 more than the Sport.
