Ford’s green wind of change

Ford is planning to increase fuel economy on its US car range by adding not one but two turbochargers to four-cylinder, V6 and V8 petrol engines. It’s also going to put a diesel engine in its F-150 pick-up truck from 2009.
Just in case American customers are worried that by going green they’ll be losing power, Ford is dubbing the new turbo engines “twin force”.
The new turbocharged petrol engines will most likely use two different-sized turbochargers working in sequence, like those on the BMW 535d. Economy gains of up to 30 per cent are expected. A variable-displacement V8, which shuts down cylinders when not needed, is also on the cards.
The first car to use the new turbocharged petrol engines will be the 2008 Lincoln MKS. From 2009, the F-150 pick-up, one of the best-selling vehicles in America, will get a 4.4-litre V8 diesel engine.
