Euro court rejects Brit speeders’ case

Two British drivers who had taken their speeding cases to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg have lost.
Idris Francis, 67, and Gerard O’Halloran, 74, had argued that the law requiring car owners to reveal who was driving when caught on camera speeding infringed the right not to incriminate oneself.
A special group of 15 judges convened in Strasbourg to make the judgement, which goes against many previously decided by the court.
The judges ruled that protection against self-incrimination was not absolute. "Those who keep and drive motor cars have accepted certain responsibilities and obligations… these include the obligation, in the event of suspected road traffic offences, to inform the authorities of the identity of the driver," said the ruling.
