Smart CDI could make UK sale after all

27 June 2007

Smart’s UK arm is hopeful that, contrary to the parent company’s original plans, the 88g/km Smart diesel CDI will be imported to the UK after all.

The model was originally excluded from the UK line-up of the all-new second generation Smart Fortwo because its performance had been considered unacceptable for the UK market.

The car’s 19.5sec 0-62mph time would make it one of the slowest cars on sale. But fast-growing interest in low CO2 emission models in the UK, and the fact that, at 88g/km, the Fortwo diesel would easily be the most competitive model on sale in this respect, is causing the company to reconsider.

The oil-burning Smart, which is powered by a 45bhp, 799cc three cylinder direct injection turbodiesel, would also be the only road-fund duty-exempt, band A model on sale in the UK.
