The Mitsubishi Outlander hasn't even been on sale for a year, and already it's in line for some detail changes.

The tweaked car will make its debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

Most significant of the changes is the introduction of a new diesel engine – Peugeot-Citroen's 2.2-litre four-cylinder unit mated to a six-speed gearbox, as used in the Outlander's sister cars, the Peugeot 4007 and Citroen C-Crosser.

The 154bhp, 280lb ft is desperately needed in the Outlander; the current 2.0-litre VW-sourced unit is one of the car's biggest failings.

Along with the new diesel, a new petrol will be available, a 2.4-litre 168bhp unit with either a five-speed manual or six-speed stepped CVT.

The Outlander also gets a new soft-finish dash, plus the option of 18-inch alloys, rain-activated wipers, rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera.

The revised car goes on sale at the end of 2007.
