Executives at troubled Chrysler have admitted that they got the Sebring and Nitro wrong, and are set to make major changes to future products.
The frank admission came in an internal Q & A section at Chrysler, where head of powertrain engineering Bob Lee said that many employees, including boss Tom LaSorda are "quite upset".
According to a document seen by the Detroit News, Lee said that Chrysler underestimated its competition and was satisfied with standards that were far too low.
"There are extremely aggressive actions being taken on many of the existing products - and also the yet-to-be-introduced products to get us at least to the middle of the competitive pack in very short order," said Lee.
The Sebring and Nitro were heavily criticised in recent reports by Consumer Reports – an American equivalent of Which? – especially for the quality of the interiors and levels of noise, vibration and harshness.
"We're certainly not satisfied with where we are," Chrysler's product development chief Frank Klegon told Detroit News. "We have to get better."
