Could this be the car to beat the Veyron? American firm SSC reckons so.

Back in March the 1183bhp, 1094lb ft 6.3-litre V8-powered Ultimate Aero TT made an attempt on the production car maximum speed record, on a closed stretch of Nevada highway.

The record is currently held by the Swedish Koenigsegg CCX, though unofficially a Bugatti Veyron has hit 253mph (we managed a remarkably easy 227mph in one on the Autobahn – watch the video here).

Bad weather hampered the Ultimate Aero's first attempt, but they haven't been sitting around.

Repeated testing has so far yielded a speed of 241.4mph, and this with the throttle at only 71 per cent. In other words, there's a lot more still to come.

"We remain on schedule to break the world production speed record in the very near future," said Junus Khan, SSC's marketing director.

All we need now is a British attempt on the record. Bristol reckons that its 1012bhp and 1036lb Fighter T can theoretically hit 270mph, but sadly we think it's about as likely to happen as the police closing a stretch of the M1 motorway specially for the purpose.
