In an uncharacteristically proactive and considerate move, the Government's Highways Agency is removing 44 major road blocks and roadworks from Britain's motorways and A-roads in a bid to minimise traffic jams over the spring bank holiday weekend.

Specifically, the agency will be clearing roadworks on the M20 (at junction 10), the M11 (between junctions 6 and 10), the M4 (between junctions 15 and 18), the M5 (between junctions 29 and 30), the M6 (at junctions 1, 2, 3, 4, 12 and 13), the M50 (at junction 2) and the M62 (junction 28 to 29).

Blockages are also being removed on the A11 (at Newmarket), the A49 (at Berrington), on the A1 (at Morpeth) and on the A404 (near High Wycombe).

However, there'll be no relief for you if you're on the M25 (near Dartford), the M2 (at Sittingbourne), the M3 (at Staines) or if you're passing the M1 widening project between junctions 6a and 10.

"We are lifting as many roadworks as we can and giving drivers information about road conditions through our website, information points at motorway services and through travel news broadcasts," said the Highways Agency Director of Traffic Operations Derek Turner.

Those roadworks remaining are being left "for safety reasons," the agency says. For a full list of the roads to avoid this weekend, visit www.highways.gov.uk/trafficinfo.
