Camera vans to catch braking speeders

17 May 2007

In June the UK law changes to allow speed cameras to be deployed randomly, and police forces aren’t going to miss this opportunity to make some more money.

Cumbria is believed to be the first county that will use the law change to place mobile cameras randomly on roads.

Research shows that speeding motorists brake for fixed cameras, then accelerate again. This is especially the case for users of portable sat-nav systems, which contain speed camera’s locations and warn users on their approach. Users will obviously not, however, be able to be warned of the location of mobile camera vans.

Cumbria is also expected to use camera vans in pairs, to catch those who speed up after spotting the first camera.
