Remember the current Agila? Vauxhall would probably rather you didn't - it's a style-deficient box on wheels also known as the Suzuki Wagon R.

This time, Vauxhall is hoping to join the cool city car ranks populated by the likes of the Citroen C1/Peugeot 107/Toyota Aygo triplets.

The new Agila certainly looks the part, judging from these initial pictures. It's still a one-box design, but there are a few round edges here and there, and the interior promises "a feel-good ambience right from the word go".

As well as a separate pod for the rev counter (just as on the C1/107/Aygo), there will also be the option of an orange or blue centre console and door panels.

Under the bonnet will be a choice of three engines, a 1.0-litre 64bhp unit with a five-speed manual gearbox, a 1.2-litre 85bhp unit optionally available with an auto 'box and a 1.3-litre 74bhp diesel.

It all looks pretty good, then. Which makes it more of a shame that Vauxhall/Opel's marketing comes straight out of the 1970s. The Agila, you see, is aimed squarely at women, because it's designed for "the lifestyle of active women today".

According to Opel's European marketing manager, Sara Nicholson, "The Agila is a clever package of fun and versatility for the girl about town." We're assuming that illuminated vanity mirrors are standard.

The new Agila will be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show in September.
