The four millionth Land Rover rolled off the production line in Solihull today (8 May) in the form of a black Discovery 3.

Rather than heading for a museum display, the landmark vehicle is following hundreds of thousands of other Land Rovers and going into the wild. It has been donated to the Born Free foundation – a wildlife charity with which Land Rover has been associated for five years.

The founding patron of Born Free, actress Joanna Lumley, was there to accept the car, which will be used as rapid response vehicle across the UK and Europe.

The event isn't just another display of Land Rover's environmental conscience; it also represents the massive growth the brand has seen over the past decade.

Three of the four million vehicles produced in Land Rover's history were made in the past six years; it took 53 years to produce the first million.
