Vauxhall has tweaked the 74bhp 1.3-litre CDTi Corsa diesel to make it greener than ever.

While previously the diesel supermini pumped out 124g/km of CO2, it now produces just 119g/km.

A small change to the car's engine management should mean more small change in the pockets of owners, because at under 120g/km the diesel Corsa now drops to a lower band of road tax. That means annual road tax is down from £115 to £35.

From the 2008/9 tax year, company car users will also feel the benefits, as the car falls into a new, lower tax band.

And if Transport for London changes the congestion charge to an emissions charge – as it is planning to, and as is likely to happen across the country eventually – the frugal Corsa could avoid the £8-a-day charge altogether.

There's no word from Vauxhall yet as to whether or not existing Corsas can be tweaked retrospectively to lower their emissions.
