Turbocharged tanning the 911 way

Meet the new Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet, the ideal way to top up your tan while travelling at three-figure speeds.
As always with the soft-top version of Porsche’s fastest 911, the new 997 version uses the same engine as its tin-top sibling.
That means it’s got a 3.6-litre flat six motor pushing out 473bhp and 457lb ft, or 502lb ft on overboost if you go for the optional £1015 Sports Chrono pack.
The 911 Turbo Cabriolet racks up some impressive figures. In standard six-speed manual form, it’ll hit 62mph from rest in 4.0sec dead, just 0.1sec behind Porsche’s claims for the coupe. Go for the Tiptronic version and it’s just 3.8sec. Top speed? A hard-top-matching 193mph.
That speed is helped by the cabrio’s restrained weight gain – it’s just 70kg heavier than the coupe. Porsche says this weight is in the extra body strengthening and roll-over protection, but that the light weight of the three-layer fabric roof helps to keep a very low centre of gravity, to the benefit of cornering.
Standard equipment is plentiful, from colour sat-nav, 19in wheels and full leather to a Bose stereo and bi-xenon headlights. Then again, at £106,180 with no options the 911 Turbo Cabriolet ought to be well-specced.
As on the coupe, options include the £5800 PCCB carbon-ceramic brake system.
The Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet goes on sale in the UK and Ireland on 8 September, which means unless you’ve already ordered one, you’re unlikely to get it until summer is long gone.
