Driven: the next Vauxhall Vectra

23 April 2007

Last week, Autocar brought you an update on the progress of Vauxhall's next Vectra saloon, General Motors' much-needed reply to the all new Ford Mondeo. This week, we're going one better; associate editor Hilton Holloway has just driven the car that will sire Luton's next fleet car champion, the Opel GTC concept, and you can read his report by clicking here.

"This is the GTC concept car, which was unveiled at the recent Geneva show," writes Holloway. "Yes, it's a two-door coupe rather than a conventional hatchback or saloon. But under the carbonfibre party dress is the real thing; from chassis to floorplan, engine bay to boot, this is the next Vauxhall Vectra. The pressed steel under-structure, the 4x4 drivetrain, the independent suspension and the 2.8-litre direct-injection V6 are all production items."

"I stepped out of current Vectra straight into the GTC," he goes on "and the most overwhelming sensation was of the massively improved interior ambience. The stylish dash sits closer to the driver and windows feel shallower, which results in a feeling of being enclosed and in control. The dash ergonomics and gearshift position are first rate."
