We may not yet know for sure how much it will cost, when it will go on sale or even how fast it will be when it does, but we now know what the next BMW M3 will sound like. That's because, as part of the build-up to the launch of the Bavarian firm's new Motorsport 3-series, BMW has recorded the new 4.0-litre V8 roaring out an exact copy of what it would sound like during a lap of Germany's Nurburgring.
At a press conference late last week, BMW confirmed some of the technical intricacies of the engine for its next M car. The motor will be just under 4.0-litres in swept volume, produce 414bhp and 295 lb ft or torque, and will weigh just 202kg – that's less than the last M3's 3.2-litre six-pot.
Judging by this audio preview, the new M3 will be even more sonorous than the last one too, and it sounds similar enough to the firm's M-Division V10 to do credit to its bigger brother.
Pay no attention to the length of the file; just because it runs beyond eight-and-a-half minutes, that doesn't mean that this new M3 will be slower than the last one (which, in CSL form, lapped the Nordschleife in less than eight minutes). It sounds to us like it's a standing lap of the circuit, and one taken at not quite full speed.
