Freelander gets top crash-test score

The new Land Rover Freelander has scored a maximum five out of five for adult occupant safety in the latest round, and a respectable four out of five for child protection.
However, while the new 4x4 was praised for the way in which it protected all of its occupants, it scored a lowly one out of four for pedestrian protection.
That’s one of the poorer results for any SUV; in February both the Honda CR-V and Mitsubishi Outlander scored two out of four for pedestrian impact.
Still, it’s not the worst: in December 2006, the Hyundai Santa Fe scored no stars at all for pedestrian safety, a dishonour it shares with the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Tellingly, the new Suzuki Grand Vitara, which was tested at the same time as the Freelander, scored three out of four for pedestrian impact tests, though only three out of five for both adult and child impact protection.
