Over three years after it launched the Golf Mk5 hatch, Volkswagen is finally to unveil its estate sibling.

To be revealed at the Geneva motor show in March, the new estate follows its predecessors in offering all the usual Golf attributes but with a larger load bay.

It had been thought that the Golf Plus (a slightly larger hatch) had eliminated the need for the estate, but having sold 1.2 million Golf wagons since 1993, VW has decided to build a new one.

The new car offers 690 litres of boot space with the rear seats up (compared with a Golf’s 350 litres and the Golf Plus’s 395-505 litres), and 1550 litres with the seats folded (versus 1305 and 1450 litres). The estate’s load bay is also longer than the Plus’s.

The estate will be available with a choice of two petrol engines, including the 1.4-litre ‘Twincharger’ engine, and two diesels, with either 103 or 138bhp.

There’s no word yet on pricing or an on sale date for the UK.
