Hyundai's Focus leaked: it's the i30

22 February 2007

The internet picture leaks just keep on coming. This time it’s Hyundai's European Focus-rival that has appeared online, published mistakenly by an Italian website weeks ahead its Geneva show debut.

Not only have the leaked photos shown us what the finished family hatchback will look like, they've also made its name public, which had been a closely-held secret.

The Korean maker is going to call its C-segment entrant the i30, it seems, taking inspiration from the name of Apple's popular iPod digital jukebox, and abandoning its system of model names (such as Accent, Atoz and Carens) for a BMW-, Mercedes-, Volvo- or Audi-style system of letters and numbers (like 320d or V70).

The i30's exterior look holds few surprises. As our spy shots suggested, it bears a close resemblance to the Kia Cee'd, a car with which is shares a platform, although the Hyundai is particularly distinctive from the rear, thanks to its outsized, wrap-around taillights.
