After an amendment to UK traffic law that comes into force today, if you use your mobile phone at the wheel, you're risking points on your license, a tougher fixed penalty and, if you challenge the allegation in court and lose, a tougher fine too.
A law imposing a £30 on-the-spot fine for those caught using their mobile phone whilst driving came into force more than a year ago, but as of today, that law has become much more costly to ignore. The fixed penalty has risen to £60, and now comes with three penalty points on your licence; at the same time, the maximum fine imposable on you in court has risen by £2500.
Talking on your mobile while driving is still permissible if you use an in-car handsfree kit, whether it's fitted to the car by its manufacturer or by you. The golden rule is simple; if you have to touch the phone in order to field the call, it's illegal.
