Meet Peugeot's Outlander clone

09 February 2007

Does this new Peugeot 4007 look familiar? It ought to, because behind the Peugeot family face it's essentially a tweaked Mitsubishi Outlander.

That means it's a Honda CR-V-rivalling SUV with switchable four-wheel drive and seven seats (a third row folding out from the boot floor). It's Peugeot's first proper 4x4, and as such a new kind of model for the firm, which is why it gets the "00" tag, as used on the 1007. Sadly, that doesn't mean it gets trick electric sliding doors.

What the 4007 does get, however, is Peugeot's excellent 2.2-litre HDi diesel engine. The Outlander uses a 2.0-litre VW-sourced diesel engine which has a serious deficit of low-down power. The 4007's engine (currently it's the only one available) provides 156bhp and 280lb ft from 2000rpm.

Don’t expect it to be quick, however – Peugeot hasn't released any 0-60mph times, only in-gear times, which suggests that the 4007 is no sling-shot. Still, with standard ESP, six airbags, ISOFIX mountings and plenty of boot space (at least with the third row folded), the 4007 ought to appeal to families.

There's no word on pricing yet, but expect it to be close to the Outlander at around £25,000. Citroen is also to introduce its own version of the car, the curiously named C-Crosser.
