You're looking at the car that will give Citroën a new face - the next C5, caught by Autocar's spy photographers on test this week. The new French brand's family saloon will get the front end styling of last year’s dramatic C-Metisse concept, in an attempt to compete with Ford’s smart new Mondeo and the next Renault Laguna.

This new C5 is due on sale in the UK in 2008, and will have much sharper styling than the current model (see our gallery for an artist's impression). A Citroën insider described the new saloon as “more conventional, but more handsome”. It will also be more luxurious and built to a higher quality, with interior cues such as the twin LCD dashboard screens lifted from the innovative C4 Picasso. The C6’s head-up display is likely to be an option.

A longer wheelbase than the current C5 should make for a more spacious cabin, and better motorway stability. The car will use a development of Citroën’s air suspension (also as seen on the C6), and engines will include the 2.7-litre, PSA-Ford V6 diesel and PSA's own 3.0-litre V6 petrol.
