New hybrid-only model is under development for launch in 2008

Honda will shortly unveil a hybrid concept car that previews a production version of a dedicated hybrid model due in 2008.

This will be their second dedicated hybrid, as opposed to an adaptation of a conventional model, such as the current Civic Hybrid. The first was the Insight coupé, which was also the world’s first series production hybrid car.

The new model will be Civic-sized and should cost less than the bigger £17,780 Toyota Prius. A Civic Hybrid costs £16,300. The concept version will appear at the Geneva motor show this March.

Meanwhile, Honda reports strong sales of its Civic Hybrid in Britain. It shifted 1000 in the six months after launch in 2006, but now that supplies have been freed up it hopes to sell up to 5000 this year. It already has orders for 2000. The company has now sold around 200,000 hybrid cars globally.

The Honda Insight is more affordable, but no better than other hybrids such as the Toyota Prius
