SUV sales stay buoyant

19 January 2007

Chunky SUVs and 4x4s might not be the most socially acceptable vehicles to drive at the moment, but that doesn't seem to be affecting their sales.

According to research from EurotaxGlass's, publisher of the trade car price bible, Glass's Guide, sales of large SUVs – such as the Range Rover and BMW X5 - rose by over seven per cent last year.

While some of the rise in sales can be attributed to new models such as the Audi Q7, it suggests that buyers of these prestige 4x4s aren't concerned by their increasing running costs or social stigma. They perceive SUVs to offer a blend of safety and practicality that other vehicles can't match, and won't be swayed by environmental or social concerns.

And while premium SUVs have suffered increased depreciation, it's barely any more than that of equivalent luxury saloons.
