Camaro convertible breaks cover

04 January 2007

As Autocar predicted, GM has followed-up its retro-styled Chevy Camaro coupé concept with a convertible version that could hit streets on our side of the pond before the end of the decade.

Pictures of the new ragtop, to be launched at next week’s Detroit show in concept form, have leaked out onto the internet just a few days before the covers are due to come off it. The car uses a simple power-folding cloth roof that stows beneath a rear-hinged cover.

GM designers had to modify much of the bodywork behind the doors to make room for the folding roof. They also redesigned the windscreen – it’s higher in the middle, lower at the edges and comes with a billet aluminium frame. Like the coupé, the convertible concept comes with a 6.0-litre Corvette V8 mated to a six-speed manual transmission

To tie the concept to the original ’69 Camaro convertible, the show car comes with eye-popping Hugger Orange pearl tri-coat paint with gunmetal grey stripes.

GM has already announced that a new Camaro coupé will go into production in 2009, and right-hand drive production, for sale in the UK, is being discussed. If it approves the plans, this convertible could follow the coupe to our shores in 2010.
