Mazda will continue its flow of concept cars when it unveils the Ryuga at the Detroit show in January. It follows the Nagare, which took its bow at the recent LA show.
This gullwinged machine is the work of the company’s Japanese design studio – Nagare was conceived and created in California – and, according to Mazda, it is meant to reflect a higher level of sophistication: rich fabrics, engineered fits and hidden details. “Ryuga combines vibrancy, confidence, fun and youth in one ingenious package,” said Laurens van den Acker, Mazda’s global design director.
It is also likely to result in a production car in the next decade. Mazda won’t say what yet, but rather than a replacement for any current model, it’s more likely that the Ryuga could father an upmarket coupe for Mazda; a Mazda take on the Mercedes CLS perhaps, and a bigger brother for the RX8, with more cabin space, a range of multicylinder engines and an upmarket cabin.
Following Nagare and Ryuga, Mazda will unveil a third concept in this series from new design boss van den Acker at the Geneva show in March. It is expected to hint at the next Mazda 2 supermini.
