Audi's introducing a new 1.8-litre turbo motor on the A3 hatch, finally replacing the hugely successful 1.8T that's been used in everything from the TT to the Skoda Octavia.

The new engine uses VW/Audi's Fuel-Stratified Injection (FSI) technology, which allows fine control of the fuel injected into the combustion chamber under high pressure.

Audi says the new engine is more efficient, cleaner and more powerful than the unit it replaces, with an output of 158bhp and 184lb ft. It will initially be available in the A3 three-door and Sportback, with a standard six-speed gearbox or the option of the S-tronic dual-clutch system (formerly DSG). A three-door A3 S-tronic manages the 0-62mph sprint in 7.8sec.

The A3 1.8 TFSI goes on sale on in Europe in January. It is expected to cost around £18,000 when it goes on sale in the UK later in the year.
