Just because petrol prices are lower than they've been in six months doesn't mean we can forget about alternative fuels, and Honda's been busy on its latest fuel-cell vehicle.

It's still at least a couple of years away from being ready for production in even limited numbers, but on Monday (25 September) Honda gave a demonstration run of the new FCX fuel-cell car.

Honda has already been trialling fuel-cell vehicles, with around 15 original FCXs worldwide leased out to carefully selected owners. Unlike that car, which is essentially a supermini, the new FCX is a full four-seater, based on the concept shown at the 2005 Tokyo motor show.

The new car is made possible by a new fuel cell that is more efficient, more compact and lighter. It is backed up by a lithium-ion battery. We can't tell you how it works (it's very, very complicated), but we do know it involves water. For the moment, we're sticking with unleaded.
