Aussie motorsport legend Peter Brock has been killed in an accident on an historic rally.

Brock, 61, crashed during the TargaWest rally near Perth in Western Australia. His Daytona Coupe hit a tree, killing him instantly. His co-driver Mick Hone is in a stable condition in hospital.

Australian motorsport centres on V8 touring cars, and Brock's amazing list of successes in that category made him a national hero. He won the blue riband Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama nine times and also lifted the Australian Touring Car title on three occasions.

Brock retired in 1997 but still made occasional appearances. In 2003 he was part of the winning team at the Bathurst 24 Hours, and he recently competed at the Goodwood Revival meeting.

For more details, and tributes from Brock's motorsport colleagues, see our sister site www.autosport.com.
