Remember the 607? Peugeot’s big saloon has always been a decidedly left-field choice - unless you’re a French bureaucrat - and now it’s even more unusual, with the introduction of a twin-turbo four-cylinder diesel engine.
Peugeot says that the 607’s 2.2-litre HDi engine is the first twin-turbo four-cylinder diesel in a car. The engine produces 170bhp and 277lb ft from just 1500rpm, but most buyers will probably be more impressed by the 44.1mpg average fuel economy, £26,495 list price and low company car tax due to CO2 emissions of just 170g/km.
Like the two turbos in the BMW 535d’s six-cylinder diesel engine, the 607’s turbochargers operate sequentially for smooth power delivery, but the Peugeot’s turbos are identical in size where the BMW’s are not.
The new 607 HDi comes with every option already added (including xenon lights, leather upholstery, a six-disc CD changer, sat-nav, electric seats and parking sensors) and fits into the range above the 2.0-litre HDi 136 and below the 3.0-litre V6 petrol.
