JCB's assault on the diesel land speed record took a high-speed step forward yesterday when its Dieselmax streamliner exceeded 300mph for the first time.
"The car was pulling like a train," said driver Wing Commander Andy Green, "it behaved perfectly, with virtually zero wheelspin."
The Dieselmax achieved 308mph in one direction on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA, but Green believes the British-built car was "not flat out," and the team hopes to go over 300mph again today.
Only one problem marred the day - the primary parachute failed to open and Green was forced to use the exhaust brake to slow the car enough to open the second parachute.
