Muscle-car battle is back on

10 August 2006

More great news for muscle-car fans: GM has listened to their “overwhelmingly enthusiastic response” to the Chevrolet Camaro concept and decided to make the car, just weeks after rival Chrysler gave the go-ahead to the Dodge Challenger.

The new Camaro was unveiled at the Detroit motor show this year – as was the Challenger - but the original first appeared in late 1966, going head to head with the Ford Mustang.

GM chief Rick Wagoner has promised that the production car will be “almost identical” to the rear-wheel drive 400bhp 6.0-litre V8-engined concept.

That car’s V8 featured a cylinder shut-down facility that, it is claimed, offered 30mpg fuel economy out of town, but the real thing will also be available with a more frugal V6.

Production is set to start at the end of 2008, with the first cars going on sale in the first quarter of 2009. Disappointingly, there is no indication that any right-hand drive cars will be made.
